Butalbital APAP Online Information

Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine is a sedative barbiturate combined with a non-aspirin pain-relief medicine (namely, acetaminophen) and caffeine. Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine is a non-narcotic pain-relief medicine and relaxant that is often prescribed in two major cases:

  1. to manage tension headaches caused by muscle contractions in the neck and shoulder area,

How Taken

Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine is available as a capsule and tablet to take by mouth. The normal dosage is 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours, but if your doctor has prescribed you other dosage, you should take Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine exactly as directed by your doctor. Total daily dosage should not be more than 6 tablets. Extended and repeated use of this product is not recommended because of the risk of development of physical dependence.

Warnings and Precautions

When taking Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine you should be aware of the following. Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine may cause you to become very drowsy or less alert; hence, driving or operating dangerous machinery as well as participating in any hazardous activities which require full mental alertness is not recommended until you know how you respond to this drug. If you are being treated of severe depression or you have a history of severe depression or drug abuse, check with your doctor before taking Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine. Use this drug with caution if you are elderly or are currently in a weakened condition, if you have liver, kidney problems, or if you have severe abdominal troubles. Note that this medication contains acetaminophen (Tylenol), which is toxic to your liver and can be fatal if you take more then the recommended dosage. The total daily dose of acetaminophen should not exceed 4000mg (4g), or 2000mg (2g) if you are elderly or a chronic user of acetaminophen. Keep in mind that there are many over the counter products that contain acetaminophen, and each tablet of this product contains 325mg. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine can harm a developing baby. Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine also passes into breast milk.

Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Although, if it is close to the time to take the the next dose, you should skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. You should not take a double dose to compensate a missed one.

Possible Side Effects

There is no way to anticipate a medicine's side effects. If you suspect that any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor immediately. Less common or rare side effects of Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine might include (in alphabetical order): Agitation, allergic reactions, constipation, depression, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, earache, exaggerated feeling of well-being, excessive sweating, excessive urination, excitement, fainting, fatigue, fever, flatulence, headache, heartburn, heavy eyelids, high energy, hot spells, itching, leg pain, mental confusion, muscle fatigue, numbness, rapid heartbeat, ringing in the ears, seizure, shaky feeling, skin redness and/or peeling, sluggishness, stuffy nose, tingling.

Storage

You should store Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine in the temperature below 86 F (30 C), in a tight container and out of reach of children.

Overdose

It's crucially important not to overdose Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine and not to combine this medication with alcohol or other CNS (central nervous system) depressant. This may lead to unconsciousness or even death. The following conditions are the symptoms of Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine overdose: severe drowsiness, vomiting with blood, confusion, extreme weakness, shortness of breath, hallucination, too slow or troubled breathing, lack of coordination, slurred speech, unusually slow heartbeat.

Additional Information

When taking Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine please keep in mind the following:

  • You should not take Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine once you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 2 weeks. It could result in dangerous side effects.
  • Note that Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine may increase the effects of alcohol and other drugs that cause drowsiness, for example antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives (used to treat insomnia), other pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants.
